James Boyd Lewis, age 67, went to be with his heavenly Father on September 19, 2026 passing peacefully following a long illness. He is now free from illness, embraced by his loving God, and rejoined with his dad and mom.
He was known for his contagious loving smile, funny spirit, his caring heart and the genuine kindness he showed to others. He had a way of making people laugh, feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. To his family and friends, he was more than just a loved one—he was someone they could count on and a person whose presence made life a lot brighter.
He was born in Harlan County, Kentucky and is the son of the late Burney Sr. and Iris (Register) Lewis. James is survived by several loving family members and lifelong friends, who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him. James’ loves of his life were his many family members, his lifelong friends and his fur babies.
James was a Christian man who believed in his Lord and Savior. He was truly a special man. His kindness and gentle spirit touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
James graduated from Warren East High School in Kentucky Class of 1977. He went on to graduate from Nashville State Technical Institute College in Nashville, Tennessee.
Following this accomplishment, he went on to work at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for over 20 years as a Lead Computer Operator.
James was an avid chess player, enjoying the challenge, strategy, and quiet concentration that came with the game. He loved playing in chess tournaments and playing against some of best players in the world. He also loved collecting chess sets.
He was also a devoted Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan and took great joy in cheering on his team. His favorite shows were about aliens and yes, he believed aliens were real (an inside family and friend joke).
Though James is no longer with us…. His smile, humor, kindness, gentle nature, and the love he gave us all so freely will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered forever!!!
On Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 1:00 pm there will be a Graveside Service with burial to follow in Cumberland, KY at the Lewis Cemetery near Hwy 119 and a Celebration of Life get together following.
Rest peacefully, James
You will never be forgotten.
