Margo was born and grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. After high school she joined the Air Force and met the love of her life, another radar operator, Alvin. They married and were stationed in Buffalo, NY and Nova Scotia, Canada before returning to “The Village” where they would live together for nearly 65 years. You would hardly ever see Margo without Alvin. They enjoyed yard sales, community events and piddling in the yard together in their later years.
Margo was a selfless volunteer for DuPont Elementary school for many years even after her children no longer attended. She received several recognition awards for her service including the Good Friends Volunteer of the Year award for Metro Nashville Schools. Margo loved helping children, especially those who needed some extra attention. She loved all the friends she had in the teachers and other volunteers at the school.
When a paying position for teachers’ aid became available after more than a decade of volunteering, she became an employee of DuPont Elementary School. Margo was a talented artist and created murals in the hallways of the elementary school and colorful bulletin boards enjoyed by a multitude of children over the years.
Margo was a Brownie leader for many years in Old Hickory. She watched generations of children grow up from her troops of girls, and loved seeing the families of her Brownies later in life.
Margo was a huge lover of animals and the outdoors. She wouldn’t leave an animal in need without assistance, whether it be bottle feeding, vet care or a home. She began a TNR (Tip Neuter Release) effort for homeless cats with her own money over 40 years ago, and was never without the company of beloved pets. The suffering she eliminated for animals is immeasurable.
Margo loved flowers and plants and had a green thumb. When her children were young and she was home caring for them, she had numerous beautiful rose gardens she tended filled with rose bushes of every kind. She was very pleased to share those with her neighbors.
In her later years of life, with her health failing she found happiness and comfort in memories of all these things. Margo will be greatly missed by family, kitties and her faithful companion dog Tippy. Margo is survived by her devoted husband Alvin Caplinger, son Scott Caplinger, and daughter Keely Caplinger.
