Marion Donald Hancock, 79, of Madison, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at his home. A graveside service will be held at noon on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 1150 South Dickerson Road, Goodlettsville, Tennessee 37072. Visitation will be held from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 and from 10:00 till noon on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 preceding the burial.
Don was born Sunday, August 20, 1939, in McAllen, Texas, to Robert N. and Florence O. Hancock. He graduated from McAllen High School in 1957, the Plan II Honors Program at The University of Texas, Austin, in 1961, and Columbia University in New York City with his Masters and Ph.D. in Political Science in 1965. He received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for his graduate studies and was a Fulbright Scholar. Don spent his life doing the work he loved best, both teaching and writing as a professor and author at the University of Texas in Austin and at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Living for extended periods in Germany and Sweden, he conducted research on comparative European politics. He co-authored multiple editions of Politics in Europe, as well as The Baltic Security Puzzle, among many other works. He continued to research and write long past retirement. In addition to his beautiful mind, Don had a beautiful heart. He was gentle and kind and will be deeply missed.
Don is survived by his spouse, Mark Angell; children, Erik L. Hancock and Kendra Hancock Posey; brother, Robert N. Hancock and sister-in-law Priscilla Hancock; five grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sister, Mary Elizabeth Hancock Kirkpatrick.
