Mel taught music in the public schools, and later on he earned his masters degree in School Administration, and advanced to school principal (all 3 levels) for the remainder of his 33 years in the business.
He is survived by his loving wife Billie, and two sons; Mike of Jackson, Mississippi, and Allan of Franklin, Tennessee.
Mel will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, in Murfreesboro, on Monday, December 23 with a small family service held graveside.
