He was born July 17, 1947 in Brooklyn New York to Charles Eugene “Gene” and Eleanor (Einenkel) Waller. The family moved to Tennessee in 1950 where Rod lived a typical suburban childhood with his brothers Jimmy and Tommy and sister Barbara.
After graduating from Goodlettsville High School in 1965, Rod entered the Navy and served as a corpsman in Vietnam during 1968-69. There he earned the Bronze Star for bravery in combat.
Rod married Sandra, his wife of 58 years, in 1967. They had two children: a son, Matt (born 1971) and a daughter, Amy (born 1973). They also consider Sam Frey as an adopted son.
After the death of his father in 1975, Rod and brother Jimmy took over the family business. Waller Furniture was a mainstay in Madison until their retirement in 2008.
Rodney was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He also enjoyed golf and spending time with his family. He was a friend to all and was known for his generosity, kindness, and humor. Rod was a man you could count on for anything. He loved his family and friends, and delighted in his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father Gene, his mother, Ellen, and his brothers Jimmy and Tommy. He is survived by his wife Sandra, daughter Amy, sons Matt and Sam (Nanci), grandson Ben, granddaughters Rachel and Ivy, and sister Barbara.
His faith in Jesus Christ guided his life, and we rejoice knowing he is in the arms of his Savior.
“…do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”
