He was born on November 30, 1953 to Vernon Clay Wakefield and Dorothy Augusta Carter in Nashville, Tennessee.
Steve is survived by his sons, Steven (Kim) Wakefield Jr., Brandon (Kelly) Wakefield, and daughter Melissa McComb. He will be truly missed by his 13 grandchildren, James Wakefield, Chase Wakefield, Leighton Wakefield, Atlee Wakefield, Owen Wakefield, Brenner Wakefield, Charly Thompson, Brody Thompson, Amanda McComb, Bubba McComb, Paige Newman, Hope Newman and Marilyn Newman. Cherished by numerous great-grandchildren.
Steve worked as a painter and wallpaper hanger. He was the best wallpaper hanger in Middle TN. He was so good at it that his customers would often have him drive all over the Southern US to hang wallpaper in their new houses, and he would always take his sons. For the last 30 years he worked for Porter/PPG Paints where he made life-long friendships with his employees, and customers. Steve was more than a store manager. He was a friend, a listening ear, a hug, a laugh, and a sounding board. He was the hardest working person anyone has ever met.
When Steve wasn’t at work, he was hosting fishing tournaments for Fisher’s of Men. He was a director, and mentor. His favorite Bible verse is Matthew 4:19. He was indeed a Fisher of Men. He dedicated his life to Jesus and his church, Crossroads Fellowship. He was on the board, and part of the team that launched “the biggest, little church in Nashville.”
Out of all of this, his biggest life accomplishment was raising his two boys on his own. He lived for those two boys. He taught them how to fish, and how to work with their hands. His proudest moment was when he totally, and completely gave his heart and soul to Jesus, Our Lord and Savior.
Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow Me.” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
