Born in Awo Idemili, Imo State, she was one of six siblings and the oldest daughter. From childhood, she carried a deep curiosity for learning, especially in science, a passion that grew during her years in Nigerian boarding school. After marrying Francis Mbamala, she moved to Huntsville, Alabama, to join him, where she continued her education at Alabama A&M University. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Food Science, graduating cum laude, and later obtained her Master of Science in Food Science. During this time, she welcomed her first child, Jeffrey, and two years later, her daughter, Beverly.
Her career in Food Science took her across the country and opened doors for her to work with major brands including Little Caesars, Post, Nestlé, Bubbies, and eventually La Canasta, where she retired. Her professional journey led her to live in Michigan, Ohio, Hawaii, and Arizona. Even after retiring, she remained motivated and active, earning her real estate license and selling homes simply because she enjoyed contributing to her community and staying busy.
She stayed deeply connected to her Nigerian heritage and was an active member of several organizations, including the Imo Women’s Association of Michigan, the Nigerian Catholic Women’s Association, the Awo-Idemili Community Association, Imo United Women’s Group, and the Orsu Local Government Association. Through these communities, she built lifelong friendships, supported cultural initiatives, and celebrated her heritage with pride.
Her entrepreneurial spirit was evident throughout her life. While living in Detroit, she created her own cookie brand, B&J Cookies, named after her children, Beverly and Jeffrey, and sold them through local businesses. She also invested in multiple properties in Detroit, managing rental homes with determination and business sense. Despite her many accomplishments, she remained humble and often turned to her children for support, especially when preparing for job interviews. She sometimes felt insecure about her accent and would ask them to role-play interview questions with her, creating cherished memories that reflected her courage, vulnerability, and the close bond she shared with her family.
She was widely known for her generosity. If someone was in need, she never hesitated to help, often offering financial support or guidance with an open heart. Her kindness touched family members, friends, and countless people within her community. Helping others was second nature to her and one of the defining qualities of her life.
She found joy in traveling, cooking, attending Nigerian events, spending time with friends, and sharing laughter with loved ones. Above all, she cherished being a grandmother. Her grandchildren, Noland and Preston, were the light of her life, and she made it a tradition to take them out for weekly ice cream, moments filled with joy, sweetness, and lasting memories.
Her life was marked by dedication, courage, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and community. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and accomplishment, and her impact will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know her.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Parish, 14818 W Deer Valley Dr, Sun City, AZ 85375, on April 25, 2026, at 11:00 am.
