Gerald Daniel “Slim” Lauer, 96, of Goodyear, left this earth September 13, 2012. He was born September 17, 1915 at Gracey, Ohio to Edward and Florence Lauer. Gerald and Mildred, his wife of 58 years and who preceded him in death, moved their family from Ohio to Goodyear, AZ the summer of 1944 based on doctor’s recommendation. Gerald immediately obtained work managing the auto service station located at the corner of Western Avenue and Litchfield Road in Goodyear which was operated by Goodyear Tire and Rubber. He managed that station until 1954 and then opened his Slim’s Mobil Gas service station on Western Avenue in Avondale, operating it until his retirement in 1981. Slim was known for his attention to detail and could be trusted to do the job well when his customers left their automobiles to him for their service needs. Gerald and family were one of the founding families of the Goodyear Church of Christ established in 1958 and were actively involved in the church’s growth for many years. The church was originally established in Tolleson in 1944 and moved to Goodyear on the completion of the new facility at the corner of Loma Linda and La Jolla. Gerald is survived by daughter Carol Sue (Jerry) Seal, grandchildren, Anniece (Mark) Foster, Julie (Wayne) Swanson, Kelly (Sally) Seal, Keith Seal, Kristen (Roy) Barron, Alan Lauer, Mark (Amy) Lauer, Tammy Phillips, twenty-two great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred, sons Gary and David. A visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm Wednesday, September 19th at Thompson Funeral Chapel in Goodyear, AZ. A graveside service will be held at 10am Thursday, September 20th at Greenwood Memory Lawn in Phoenix, AZ. There will be a Memorial Service at 11am Saturday, October 6th at the Goodyear Church of Christ, 807 N. La Jolla Blvd in Goodyear, AZ (Loma Linda & La Jolla). Services are under the direction of Thompson Funeral Chapel in Goodyear, AZ.
