James Anthony Porzio, born June 2, 1944 in Chicago, IL, passed away on August 31, 2026, at the age of 82. He will be remembered as a beloved and devoted presence—someone whose steady work ethic, generosity of spirit, and hard-earned wisdom lifted up the people fortunate enough to know him. Though words can’t fully hold a life so richly lived, they can honor the joy, creativity, and inspiration he left behind.
In his early years, James completed a few years of college before serving in the military for five years. He often joked that he “walks around with a clipboard,” a line that captured both his practical approach and the quiet confidence he carried. During his service, he taught soldiers how to protect themselves against chemicals—serious work that reflected his sense of responsibility and his commitment to others’ well-being.
After his military years, James became a salon business owner and poured his energy into the beauty industry—work that was never just a job to him, but a craft and a calling. Over several decades, he was a talented artist in color, styling, and dressing hair, and he became a mentor whose encouragement and high standards helped others believe in their own abilities. He owned and operated several Showcase Salons and later Showcase Di Colore, alongside his business partner of 25 years, Joe Butera. Together they built not only successful businesses, but lasting friendships and lifelong bonds with the stylists who worked with them.
James was also an internationally recognized artist, creative visionary, and a respected leader in the industry. His work took him around the world, performing hair trends and sharing his creativity and expertise on stages for globally recognized companies. His talent and vision eventually led him to produce and direct hair shows, collaborating with Italy to train stylists in artistry, education, fashion, and performance—always seeking to inspire and elevate other professionals. Even in retirement, he never truly stepped away; he continued to share advice and creative ideas about hair design and salon operations with anyone who asked, remaining generous with his time and knowledge. His greatest professional legacy lives on in the stylists he mentored, encouraged, and inspired, and in the many lives he touched. His difference was passion.
James made his home in Buckeye, Arizona, and in retirement—though he was famously one of the few who genuinely wished he was still working. While Living in Victory at Verrado, he volunteered at St Mary’s Food Bank, and he enjoyed outdoor concerts, painting classes, trivia nights, and the WNBA, especially the Fever. Most importantly, he rescued many kitties over the years, giving them homes and care—another quiet reflection of the generous heart so many knew well.
James’s life was also rooted in love and partnership. He shared 40 years of marriage with Alana. They met at James’s salon, where Alana worked, and their shared passion for the beauty industry meant they spent much of their lives side by side. Beyond work, they loved movies and trying new restaurants, building a life full of shared moments and lasting love.
James is survived by his Daughter Jill Porzio, who he was extremely proud of and all the accomplishments she's had.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Porzio and Francis DeNapoli.
Those who knew James also knew the brightness he carried into a room—his sharp, quick sense of humor that brought laughter wherever he went. In his younger days he was an avid racquetball player and even dabbled in martial arts; and in a story that never failed to amuse, in meditation he once sat too close to a candle and set his “gee” on fire!
James Anthony Porzio lived as a inspirational force—wise in his counsel, generous in his support, and deeply devoted to the people, the craft, and the life he loved. His influence will continue in every act of mentorship he modeled, every creative spark he ignited, and every life he made lighter simply by being in it.
