Janet grew up in Keansburg, New Jersey, and was a proud cheerleader at Keyport High School before graduating from New Brunswick Secretarial School. In her early years, she worked at Beth Israel Memorial Park in Woodbridge, New Jersey, where she began building the strong work ethic and caring spirit that would define her life.
On July 20, 1957, Janet married the love of her life, Hugh MacDonald Black, a United States Army officer. Together they built a life centered on love, family, adventure, and service. Through Hugh’s military career, Janet embraced life in many places, making homes and lasting memories in Arizona, Hawaii, Georgia, New Jersey, and beyond. Their travels also took them around the world, including time in Germany, Italy, and France.
After Hugh’s retirement from the Army, Janet and her husband took over her father’s family business, Stegeman Service, where she managed the front office, scheduling, and bookkeeping with dedication and care until the business was sold in 1987. Then they enjoyed a long retirement in Arizona.
Janet gave generously of her time throughout her life. She volunteered with the PTA, the Officers’ Wives’ Club, and the Tohono Chul Gift Shop in Tucson, Arizona. She found joy in helping others and in being part of her community wherever life took her.
Above all, Janet treasured her family. Easter was her favorite holiday, and she loved bringing everyone together for special occasions and celebrations. She was known for her thoughtful cross-stitched gifts, which she lovingly created for family and friends. Janet also enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble, and games with her grandchildren. She played Mahjong weekly with dear friends, enjoyed the occasional bit of luck at the slot machines, and loved traveling and new adventures.
Janet will be remembered for her warmth, strength, generosity, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her life was marked by devotion to her family, pride in her work, a spirit of service, and an enduring sense of fun and adventure. She leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished memories, and a family deeply grateful for the life she lived and the love she gave.
