Jorge S. Vasquez Sr. went home to be with his Heavenly Father January 12, 2011. He was born February 22, 1952, to Santos and Benita Silva Vasquez in Mesquite, NM. His family moved to Avondale when he was two. He was drafted in the United States Army in 1972.
Jorge was an active lifetime member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Goodyear/Avondale. He was the President of the Men’s Club, served as a leader in the RCIA journeys, and worked with Marriage Encounter and Cursillos for many years. Among many other activities and accomplishments, he retired after 30+ years with Southwest Gas.
He was a kind-hearted man who always had his door open for anyone. He would help anyone in need. He was a wonderful mentor as well, always knowing the right thing to say, and would frequently reference the Bible and speak so sweetly from his heart about Jesus. Jorge was famous for dancing with his wife, daughters, and the whole line of ladies waiting to get the opportunity to dance with him. He was known to teach more than a few how to two-step. We know for a fact that he is dancing in heaven. Jorge was a well-known and loved fixture of the South West Valley. He played a father figure to so many and will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Yolanda, and his five children: Bibiana and her husband Shawn Rice; Elizabeth Vasquez; SGT Jorge Vasquez Jr. and his wife Tiffany; Davina Vasquez; Emily and her husband PFC Ian Blazek. His grandchildren: Alex Jr., Abigail, Amree, Aliana, Conner, Gabriel, and Aiden. His 9 siblings: Pauline, Marcy, Daria, Benita, Reymundo, Vera, Lola, Mary, Santos Jr., and their spouses. His mother-in-law Florence Rodriguez, sister-in-law Esther Rodriguez, brother-in-law John Rodriguez and their spouses. As well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, family and dear friends.
Visitation for Jorge will be held on Friday, January 21, 2011, from 7:00-9:00 PM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church; 539 E. La Pasada Blvd.; Goodyear, AZ 85338.
