Born on January 14, 1938, in Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, Maria was the daughter of Guadalupe and Transito Olea. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband Celso Rivas, her sister Elva, brother Pancho, sister-in-law Guillermina; and grandson Ivan Aguirre.
Maria’s proudest accomplishment was the family she built and raised with love and strength. She is survived by her seven children—Edgardo, Ariel, Paul, Isaac, Noe, Beckett, and Olimpia—15 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
A woman of quiet strength and endless warmth, Maria lived modestly but gave generously. She was a legendary Mexican food cook whose meals brought people together and created memories that will last a lifetime. She had a sharp wit, a warm laugh, and a deep love for music, laughter, and her Diamondbacks, Suns and Cardinals—seldom missing a game or a reason to cheer.
Maria had a special gift for making others feel seen and valued. She greeted every child she encountered with affection and kindness, becoming “Mom” not just to her own children, but to their friends and anyone in need of comfort. Her home was a place of welcome, and her heart was wide enough for everyone.
She was her family’s loudest and most loyal supporter, and strongest foundation. Maria leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and community. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were lucky enough to know her.
A celebration of her life will be held in Goodyear on August 2, 2025, at 9:30 am at Thompson Funeral Home.
