Nicolas A. Mendez

Nick was born in National City, California, and was raised in Phoenix, Arizona, where he spent his childhood and developed the strong work ethic and determination that would guide him throughout his life.

In 1983, Nick proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country with honor. During his military career, he became a Navy SEAL and served as an engineman aboard submarines. He carried great pride in his service to his country, and this remained an important part of who he was throughout his life.

After his military service, Nick devoted many years to working as a heavy machinery mechanic in the mining industry throughout Kearny, Globe, and Morenci, Arizona. He was a master mechanic, highly respected in his craft for his exceptional skill, deep knowledge, and ability to repair and rebuild just about anything. His reputation for excellence and reliability earned him the respect and admiration of all who worked alongside him.

Nick’s greatest joy was his family. He is lovingly survived by his five children: Nicole Mercado and her husband, Carlos Mercado, Nicolas Mendez Jr., Antonio Mendez, Gabriel Mendez and his wife, Taylor Mendez, and Natalia Mendez. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Lucia, Olivia, Sofia, Noelia, Mateo, Leith, Zoey, Holly, and Austin.

He is also survived by his mother, Lourdes Moreno, as well as his brothers, Miguel Mendez, Armando Mendez, Favio Vasquez, and his sister, Caroline Mendez.

Nick had a lifelong love of the outdoors and found happiness in fishing, hunting, and 4-wheeling. He also had a passion for working on cars and engines, a skill that served him well throughout his life.

Nick’s family takes comfort in God’s promise of eternal life and rejoices in knowing that he is now at peace with Jesus Christ. His life was one marked by service, perseverance, and love for his family & country.

In keeping with his wishes and in recognition of his faithful military service, Nick’s ashes will be committed to the sea by the United States Navy, a final and fitting tribute to a man who proudly served his country and held a lifelong connection to the ocean.

Nick will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, mother, siblings, extended family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service, masterful craftsmanship, hard work, and unconditional love will continue to live on in the lives of those he leaves behind.
