

Philip graduated from High School in Oregon City, Oregon, in 1967. He went on to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington in 1974.
Philip served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 to 1973, attaining the rank of Major.
Following his time in the Marines, Philip devoted his professional life to the Paper Industry. He worked at papermills as a production manager, built steam systems for Willamette Industries, and ultimately retired in 2017 from International Paper after 44 years.
In 1970, Philip married Therese Schnell. Together they welcomed their son, John Schnell in 1971 and their son, Rick Schnell in 1972.
Philip is survived by his wife, Therese Schnell; his sons, John Schnell and Rick Schnell; his sister, Molly Schnell; his grandchildren, Tara, Jason, Micarl, Kinley, and Teague; and his great-grandchildren, Zane and Ever.
A Memorial Service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd, Portland, OR 97086, on September 11, 2026, at 1:00 pm.
