Rafael Alicea-Millet

Born July 19, 1938, in Utuado, Puerto Rico to Ramon and Rosa Alicea. Rafael lived modestly in Puerto Rico with his five siblings. As a youth, access to education was sometimes limited; thus, he shined shoes at home until he could enlist. In May of 1957 seeking a better life, he enlisted in the United States Army.

He subsequently completed his high school education there and received numerous commendations over a distinguished twenty-year career, which included two tours in Vietnam and service in Korea. In his personal life he was blessed with family. In 1965, after completing his first of two tours in Vietnam, he married the love of his life, Aminta Alicea. In his fifty plus years of marriage to Aminta, they would raise four children together.

After his retirement from the Army in August 1977, Rafael and his family made their home in California. Rafael subsequently accepted a role with Los Angeles County and after serving Los Angeles County for ten years, he retired a second time. At retirement, Rafael and Aminta would then retire together in Goodyear, Arizona.

Rafael enjoyed the simple things in life, like fishing, bar-b-queuing, watching his ball games and western movies and playing the lottery. He stayed informed about current events and had a passion for history. Over time, he increasingly prioritized his family. He was blessed with sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; he sought to appreciate each moment fully. In his absence, he was always inquiring and helping wherever he was able.

Rafael is survived by his four children: Carmen Gant, Rafael Alicea Jr., Jaime Alicea, and Edgard Alicea along with their loving spouses and families. In addition, he is survived by his younger brother Ramon Alicea.

He is proceeded in death by his loving wife Aminta Alicea, his first-born grandchild, Lindsey Gant, his brother, David Alicea and sisters Lydia Alicea, Candida Alicea, and Blanca Alicea.

Rafael: a husband, father, grandpa, friend, hero- you will truly be missed. Until we meet again.
