With a personality as unique as his name, Astor Barrington Chevalleau, also affectionately known as Barry, set forth on his journey to impact our lives as he did in his unique and special ways.
Barry's childhood began in a single-family home with his Mother, the dearly departed Nerissa McIaverly Jones, to whom he attributed his courage, faith and strength. He loved and praised his Mother and seized any opportunity he got to speak about how he watched his Mom work tirelessly to provide the foundation for his success. Life brought on many other challenges and as a result, Barry dwelled intermittently with his Aunts, Uncles and Cousins in Jamaica. Despite all, Barry held very fond memories of growing up with his cousins- Marcia, Donovan, Brian, Elaine, Deanna, Raymond and many others. The bond he had with his cousins outweighed the many hardships. The Dearly Departed Beloved Geraldine Ayton-McIaverty was Barry's Grandmother. Grandma Geraldine was pivotal in Barry's life. He loved her dearly and often reminisced about her humble home where she delivered teachings of life lessons and comforting food to him.
At the early age of 11, Barry had his first major test of faith. He underwent a nephrectomy and lost his left kidney. Once again, he rose above another challenge and was determined to come along, thus creating the path that led the way to us.
In his teenage years, Barry, with his Mom and sibling, immigrated to the United States of America, Brooklyn, NY, and Once again, equipped with courage, strength and faith, Barry set forth to purse the many opportunities ahead. He pursued an education in Architectural and Mechanical Drawing/Drafting. He worked in the related fields and became a self-taught "Jack of all trades. Barry loved working with tools, and with a creative mind, he kept busy as he took on several handy man projects. He was so creative that when he got into trouble with Marlene because he bought a red toaster that did not match the color of the other kitchen appliances, he meticulously painted the toaster black.
Orlando, Florida became the final place of residence for Barry, and as he lived closely with his Mother, once again, with courage, faith and strength, Barry moved forward to create another life where he expanded his family and ventured into another career field. He worked for 30 plus years in the culinary/hospitality industry as a cook for Disney and Universal which was his final place of employment. Barry's passion for cooking extended to the love of gardening which is evidently displayed at his home where he spent several hours daily toiling and tending to his gardens.
As life went on, Barry was challenged with many medical issues such as cardiac and diabetes. In 2005, he underwent major open-heart surgery, which was successful. However, during his hospitalization, he was inflicted with a non-healing wound on his left foot. Once again, Barry was challenged with a test of courage, strength and faith as he battled several ongoing medical issues.
During the past 3 and a half years Barry fought tirelessly to overcome the medical battles. On Saturday, October 13th, he succumbed and the journey ended.
