Mr. Benjamin Franklin Murray (89) was the son of the late Eddie Murray and Lillie Rivers Murray. He was the grandson of the late John and Ada Kelley Murray and the late Willie and Nora Singletary Rivers. Mr. Murray was born on November 17, 1930 in Orangeburg County, SC and departed this life on Sunday, April 5, 2020 in the afternoon at a home care center in Decatur, GA.
Mr. Murray was a devoted Christian who was a member of the Second Nazareth Baptist Church of Columbia, SC where he was a member of the Jubilee Choir. Later in life, Mr. Murray was an associate pastor at The God’s Temple of The 25th Hour Ministry Inc. of Winter Garden, Fl.
Mr. Murray’s passion for helping people in his community led him to a career in law enforcement, which lasted 30 years. He began as a State Constable for the state of South Carolina. After 14 years, he joined the South Carolina Capitol Police where he received a prestigious award for saving the life of a citizen in distress.
Mr. Murray was the owner/operator of several businesses located in Columbia, SC; which included Murray’s SOC Station, Murray’s ESSO (later changed to Exxon) Station on Harden Street, and Murray’s Auto Service on Farrow road. Mr. Murray coined the phrase In a Hurry, Don’t Worry, Call Murray to promote his automobile towing service, home heating oil delivery service and Lawn Cutting service which were extensions of his Farrow road business. Mr. Murray earned the title Hurry Murray from his customers for his work ethic and ability to get the job done quickly.
Mr. Murray was a loving father and husband. His marriage to Dorothy Rush Murray of 62 years produced Mr. Murray was preceded in death by his sisters: Nola Mae Wilson and Catherine Adams; brothers: Raymond Murray, Willie Murray and Allen Murray; sisters-in-law: Phyllis Ann Elliott Murray, Ruth I. Rush; brothers-in-law: Thomas Wilson, Clarence Jones Sr, Harry Pelzer, Leroy Rush, James Rush, Rudy Queenman; Parents-in-law: Lowree Rush and Thelma Williams Rush.

Mr. Murray left to cherish his memories; children: A faithful and loving wife, Dorothy Rush Murray, Bernice Murray Archie of GA and Benson (Heather) Murray of NY; granddaughters: Tiffany Monice (Reginald) Richardson Ray of GA whom are expecting Mr. Murray’s first great-grandchild, Brittany Nicole Archie of CA, Janelle Elaine Murray of NY; sisters: Geneva Jones of MD, Gertie Pelzer of MD and Beatrice (Lawrence) Daniels of SC; brothers: Edward (Lorraine) Murray of SC, Henry (Joyce) Murray of NY; sisters-in-law: Queen Ester Queenman of GA, Alvenia Rush of NY; brother-in-law’s: Nathaniel Rush of NY, Josephus Rush of NY and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We will always remember the fun times we shared with a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who loved to help others, tell stories from his life experiences and impart wisdom during his time on earth.
