Burton was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, in September 1942. His father, Uhbert, was an Air Force mechanic and his mother, Isabel, was a hairdresser. Because of his father's career, his family moved around very frequently when he was a child. He had a sister, Jan, and a brother, Roger. Burt loved Country music and bought his first guitar when he was 14 years old. At age 14 , he met Jean Harding, the love of his life, and they dated until they were married at age 19. After studying electronics and graduating from Tech High School in 1961, Burt served in the Navy Reserve for four years. He then worked for Gould Incorporation designing military weapons. After their girls, Donna and Susan, were born, Burt changed careers and became a self-employed electrical contractor, opening French Electric. He gave his family a stable home, buying a house in Orlando in 1973. He filled his time with playing pedal steel guitar in the Orange Country Band, being an Elk and Mason, and reading several novels every week. Burt passed this week, in their home of 50 years, after 61 years of marriage to Jean. He was 80 years old.
