Carroll Wray Dickerson, 93, passed away peacefully on March 22nd, 2024. Born in Canyon,Texas on December 2nd, 1930, Carroll's life exemplified a love for the American West, a dedication to service, and a deep affection for his family.
Texas Roots and a Spirit of Service
Growing up on the vast Texas plains, Carroll's first pair of boots became a symbol of his lifelong connection to the cowboy spirit. He spent his youth riding horses, working as a horse wrangler at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, and immersing himself in the natural beauty of his surroundings. This early commitment to service continued when he enlisted in the Navy Air Corps during the Korean War. He served with distinction, earning four medals during tours on the USS Coral Sea and USS Lake Champlain.
Building a Fulfilling Life
Following his honorable discharge in 1954, Carroll pursued higher education at Florida Southern College, earning his bachelor's degree in three years. He embarked on a successful career at Martin Marietta in Orlando, working on classified projects for 30 years.
In 1957, he married Carol N. O'Grady, and together they welcomed two daughters, Debra D., and Joni R. creating wonderful memories for 14 years. Carroll found love again with Sharyn Jones in 1978. They shared a happy life until Sharyn's passing in 2019.
Predeceased by his parents, Norval and Opal Dickerson, his older brother, Gordon, and grandson, Andrew. Survived by his brother Don; Daughters, Debra (Joel) Schnede and Joni (Stephen) Fussell; Grandchildren, Dawn, Jamie, Melissa, Holly, Greg, Taylor, and Savannah; and Great-grandchildren, Keri, Gianna, Adrianna, William, and Arianna, and Elena.
Giving Back and Sharing His Passions
Carroll's dedication to his community continued throughout his life. He joined the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary in 1980, volunteering his time as a backup for troopers and rising through the ranks to retire as a full Colonel after 25 years of service. His passion for the arts led him to the South Lake Art League in Clermont, Florida. There, he generously shared his knowledge by teaching photography and photo editing classes.
A Legacy of Love and Service
Carroll's legacy extends beyond his accomplishments. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, cherished by his family. He will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, dedication to service, and love for his family and the cowboy way of life.
Celebration of Life
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In place of flowers, donations may be made in Carroll's name to your preferred charity.
