Born on July 2, 1927, in Atlanta, Georgia, she was the eldest daughter of Annabelle and Emmett Steele. Growing up with three brothers and two sisters, she and her mother used to “pray for boring”. She graduated from Girls High in Atlanta and took some college courses at the University of Georgia, Atlanta Division. Never one to be without a date on a Friday night, Connie was sociable and beloved from a young age. She met Walker Garner Miller at Druid Hills Baptist Church in early 1949 and they were married that September 10th.
Connie supported her new husband as he completed his degree at Georgia Tech and later in moving to Orlando, Florida so he could pursue his dream of starting his own construction equipment business. Together they welcomed four children, Clifford Wayne, Steven Hal, Connie Lynn, and Jacquelyn Diane, that Connie lovingly raised.
Connie’s true passion was in studying her Bible and sharing the word of God with others. She was a member of many Bible study groups throughout her life, and founded one in 1999 that met on Monday nights in her home for over seventeen years. She loved teaching her Monday night Bible study group and spending time with her friends in fellowship of the Word. She had a deep love and understanding of scripture that was unparalleled. Given the opportunity, she would like to remind you that Jesus died on a Wednesday, not Friday, and He was risen sometime between sundown on Saturday and sunrise on Sunday.
Connie was also a licensed pilot. She learned to fly in the early 70s, which terrified her husband, but brought her immense joy. She loved being in the skies. She was a steadfast supporter of the nation of Israel, and was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Jewish National Fund in 2008. She was a founding member of the First Baptist Church of Windermere (now Family Church). She was deeply involved in her community both in and out of the church. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Daily Bread, and served as a past board member of the Edgewood Children’s Ranch and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
She will be forever remembered for her encyclopedic knowledge of scripture, famous homemade chocolate chip cookies, and above all, her abundant love. She is survived by her youngest sister, her four children, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other beloved family.
A celebration of life will be held at 3pm Sunday, September 15th at Family Church (formerly First Baptist of Windermere) at 300 Main Street, Windermere, FL.
