Edward Eugene Kennedy, Sr.

Edward Eugene Kennedy, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully in his home in Orlando, Florida, on December 12, 2016. Ed was born in North Adams, Massachusetts on April 9, 1928, a son to the late Matthew Kennedy and Evelyn (Beaton) Shepard. He was a graduate of Drury High School. His wife, Doris “Dodie” (Godfrey) Kennedy, whom he married on February 26, 1949 in Williamstown, Mass., died on March 5, 2011, in Orlando, Florida. Ed was an accomplished musician and enjoyed playing the saxophone, clarinet, and flute from the time he was a very young boy. Over the years, he was a member of many jazz and contemporary bands filling dance halls, weddings, and private parties with his music. Ed was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He enjoyed playing volleyball, camping with his family on summer weekends, gardening, cooking, and cake decorating. Ed was the owner/operator of Shep and Sons Garage on the Mohawk Trail in North Adams until 1978 when he and his family moved to Orlando, Florida. He then pursued a successful career in sales, achieved a black belt in karate at 62 years young, and became proficient in computer graphics, still taking classes after his 80th birthday. Ed was a very generous and dependable man who was very proud of his family. He loved making people laugh and was quick to tell a joke or a funny story to see you smile. His only son, Edward Kennedy, Jr., passed away in Winter Park, Florida, on December 8, 2011. Ed married Judi Manolas of Orlando, Florida, on April 9, 2012. Survivors include his wife, Judi, and his daughter, Lisa (Kennedy) Samuels of Orlando, Florida; nine grandchildren, Nicholas Ezzard, Ben Ezzard, Mike Ezzard, Mary Ezzard, Laurie Maze, Shawn Nutting, Eddie Kennedy III, Brittany Kennedy, James Kennedy, and numerous great-grandchildren. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Ed Kennedy will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home at 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha, Florida, 34734, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2016.

I was a kid in the so-called Five-Roads area of North Adams, MA (1956-61) when Eddie worked for his father at Shep and Sons!He helped lots of kids to form characters and values. Good-bye, Shep!
