Glorist Grayson was born on August 28, 1937 in Sandersville, Georgia. She lived with her grandparents, but longed to live with her mother, Rosetta Savarian, who had moved to Florida to find work. She eventually moved to Florida when she was a teenager to be with her mother. In the 1950’s, she moved to Fuller Crossing, was married and had six beautiful children. Later, she met Joseph Grayson Jr, the love of her life and remarried and had a son. She always wanted a big family, and through the Lord’s blessing was able to buy a house and live happily with her husband and children in Apopka, Florida. Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with her family and those around her.
She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Winter Garden, Florida; where she sang in the adult choir for several years. She later moved her membership to Fresh Anointing Church of God and Christ. Eventually, she became a member of Faith World in Orlando, Florida; where she also sang in the choir with her two daughters and granddaughter. She also sang in the Hundred Voice Choir that featured several famous gospel artists. Glorist believed in serving in the church.
Glorist was an avid gardener and a great cook. She was known for her world famous Sweet Potato Pie. Her hobbies included working on her puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and sewing, but all in all she loved to read her Bible. If you did not find her doing her hobbies or reading, she was sitting at her piano playing church hymns. She always wanted her children to play piano and even purchased a piano and paid for lessons for them to learn. She discovered her children were not interested in playing so in her 40s, she took piano lessons and became skillful in playing. She enjoyed playing for her family or anyone else who would listen.
Glorist worked at two nursing homes in Winter Garden, Florida in the Activities and Housekeeping areas. She took pride in her work and strived to perform at the highest level. In her interactions with residents, she ensured they had fun and felt valued.
Glorist encouraged her children and grandchildren to focus on their education and helped with their studies and homework. She also supported them in their involvement in sports and other school activities. When she attended various games or activities, you could always hear her cheering for her children and grandchildren on. She loved sports and played basketball on her school team. She believed in instilling family values and a spiritual foundation grounded in Christian principles. Her belief and trust in God never wavered.
Glorist was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 14, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Grayson, her parents Rupert and Rosetta Savarian and her son, Johnnie James Ligon, Jr. She leaves six children to cherish her memory - Rosa Walker, Longwood, Florida; Flora Givens and husband Franklin, Saint Augustine, Florida; Dexter Ligon and wife Shurerhonda, Kissimmee, Florida; Edna Robinson and husband Anthony, Pittsford, New York; Stephanie Mack and husband Julius of Gainesville, Florida; and Hopeton Grayson, Apopka, Florida, along with seventeen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, cousins, relatives and sorrowing friends.
