Hazel DaSilva-Johnson was born at Bushy Park, in Cherry Garden, Saint Catherine, Jamaica, West Indies on December 9th, 1955. Hazel was the first twin of a set of identical twins born to her parents, Ruby Bent and Harry DaSilver.
When she was but 9 years old, her mother died during childbirth, so Hazel went to live with her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Willel Bent. Mrs. Bent was very instrumental in teaching Hazel how to: 1) Love the Lord, and 2) Be a Lady and Go to Church (in that order!). These were life lessons that Hazel took with her everywhere she went.
Hazel attended school at The Old Harbour Primary and Secondary Schools, before going on to Trade School where she married, bore her first child, and relocated to Kingston, Jamaica for about 10 years. Hazel later divorced and moved back to her hometown where she remained until she migrated to the US to be near her daughter Janice, where she could receive better medical care, as complications from diabetes were causing her health to fail.
Nevertheless Hazel loved life and lived life to the fullest. She was a great cook, and without formal training she excelled as a seamstress. She even made her sister's wedding dress. Hazel was a very humble woman who never held grudges. She never meddled in others’ affairs, but would clearly speak her opinion about a situation when she thought her advice would serve you well.
Hazel will always been remembered for her rock solid faith. She was a woman of much effectual prayer. She took pride in interceding on behalf of those she loved. She knew without a shadow of doubt that God is able to do exactly what He has said He would do. And she wouldn't let you give up on God, because she knew that He'd never give up on you.
Hazel DaSilva-Johnson, like the Apostle Paul, fought a good fight, she has finished her course, and she has kept the faith….Henceforth there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness….(from 2 Timothy 4:7-8 King James Version).
She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, and her twin sister who died on the exact same date as Hazel, only five years earlier. She was also preceded in death by another sister, Pearl DaSilver, and her brother, Vincent Bent.
She leaves behind many memories of a life well-lived to be cherished by: her husband – Noel Johnson of Orlando; children – Janice Black, Andre Johnson, and Jade Johnson; grandson – Dylan "Tommy" Luckain; siblings – Ashley Thompson of Tampa, FL, Yvonne Graham from Canada, George Nevins from Jamaica, Trevor DaSilver from Jamaica, and Patricia DaSilver from New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
