Howard was born in Louisburg, NC on December 26, 1928. As one of a family of 17, he spent his early years working on his family’s farm before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1948. While in military service, he traveled throughout the Mediterranean area, and participated in maneuvers in Vieques, Puerto Rico. During the Korean War, he served as a mortar gunner and participated in the assault and seizure of Inchon and Seoul, South Korea, and the Wonsan, Hungnam, and Chosin Campaign of Northern Korea. He received a Presidential Unit Citation with Star, Good Conduct medal, Korean Service medal with 3 Stars, Navy Occupation medal, and the United Nations medal. He was Honorably Discharged as a Sergeant in 1952.
After leaving military service, he worked at the Brooklyn Air Force Base in Mobile, AL until 1965. He moved to Panama City, FL to work as an electrician at the Naval Coastal Systems Center and retired from the Civil Service in 1985. After retirement, he moved to Apopka, FL in 1988.
Howard was the son of Albert Carr and Bettie Lee Breedlove (both deceased) of Nash County, NC. He had 5 brothers, and 8 sisters, and was previously married to Doris Jackson (deceased). He is survived by his wife Kathryn Carr of Orlando, and his extended family includes many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and dancing where he was a member of the “Pirates” and “Angel Squares” Square Dance clubs, and the “Panama City” and “Merry-Go-Rounders” Round Dance Clubs. He also was a member of both Zion and Hope Lutheran Churches where he served as a Trustee and Usher. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Following cremation at Woodlawn in Orlando, a graveside service will be held Sunday, January 20th at 1:00 pm at Kent-Forest Lawn Cemetery in Panama City, FL.
