Ivy May Morgan was born on August 19, 1928 and enjoyed 88 wonderful years of abundant blessings. Her beloved parents, Birdie and Ernest W. Powell, raised her in the lovely countryside of Bull Savannah, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. They were a large family of aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers and cousins that circled each other with kindness, laughter and respect. Ivy completed her studies at the Bull Savannah School and in 1948 she courageously moved to New York City to begin her new life.
Ivy married her darling husband “Jos” in 1950 and devoted herself to providing their family with the most enriching experiences she could dream of in a home filled with music, books and contemporary art. She loved entertaining, preparing delicious meals and sharing spicy political debate. She had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and followed world news through newspapers and television every day. During these years, Ivy also joined with her husband in the successful ownership of a real estate business before retiring to Orlando, Florida in 1989.
Ivy took delight in her travels to China, England, Italy, France, South Korea and across the United States. In Orlando, she helped others plant new roots and she was a true and trusted confidant and mentor to all that spent time with her. It was by her hand and word that she endowed others with the confidence they needed to reach for their own dreams. Ivy truly enjoyed the marvel of her grandchildren and great grandchildren swimming in the pool and playing in her home. She always listened attentively to the stories they told their Grandma and Mama and laughed with them.
She beat so many odds, lived a most miraculous life and to it all, she then said,“So there!”
Ivy is survived by her loving daughters, Doraine Mason and Sandie “San” Smith, devoted son Donte’ “Don” Morgan, dear brother, Harry Powell and sister Merville “Pet” Powell. She leaves her legacy of compassion and strength to her grandsons Akil Mason, Jordan “Jordi” Smith and Elijah “Lijah” Smith, her granddaughter Rashida “Razzie” Mason Reneau, her great granddaughters Tianna Mason and Jayla Mason, her son-in-law Kenneth “Kenny” Smith, grandson-in-law Rasheem Reneau and cherished cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Ivy is predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Joscelyn A. Morgan, her first son, Warren, three baby angels made by this union and her grandson, Omari Mason. She returns to her mother Birdie “Annie B” Rochester Powell and father Ernest W. “Pinny” Powell, sisters Lucille “Lus” and Adelcita “Cellie”, brothers Joscelyn, Neville “Tinny”, Eric Isaac “Miles” Ernest “Ringie” and Orrett “Fred”, among many others.
Ivy will be dearly missed and we support her journey with our prayers and an eternity of loving thoughts.
