Joyce Wood

Joyce Corrigan Wood, 92, died peacefully on Monday, March 14, 2016 in Altamonte Springs, FL. She was born on November 9, 1923 in Logan, Utah to Ernest and Kate Obray of Paradise, Utah. Her She was the second of seven children. She descended from early Mormon pioneer settlers who crossed the country in wagon trains.

After high school, Joyce worked for the US government during WWII in Odgen, UT and Washington DC. During the war years, she met her future husband. In 1947 she married George C. Corrigan in St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington, D.C. They soon moved to Atlanta, GA where their three children were born: Kathryn, Patricia, and George. In 1960, the family moved to Orlando, FL. Joyce lived in the Central Florida area for 56 years.

Joyce was an active gardener with a special talent for orchids, an award winning flower arranger, an outstanding Bridge player, and an official in the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) in the management and scoring of swim meets. Joyce was a loving mother and played an active role in her children's early lives. All of her children were champion swimmers and she attended every swimming meet. Joyce was also active as a parent in Catholic schools from elementary through high school. Joyce volunteered as a "pink lady" in the gift shop at Mercy Hospital in Orlando for over twenty years.

When her husband George passed away in 1973, she returned to the work force as a financial administrative assistant at Mercy Hospital in Orlando. Joyce remarried in 1978 to William “Bill” Wood (d.1986) another avid Bridge player. Bill’s work enabled them to live in Paris, France for three years and ignited a passion for travel. Joyce traveled to every continent; particularly enjoying Europe and sea cruises. A highlight was an early trip to Mainland China.

In her 60s, Joyce took up golf, was a member of the 9- and 18-hole ladies club at her home course in Zellwood Station – as well as a regular at “Monday Madness.” Even into her late 80s, Joyce could occasionally break 100.

Joyce is survived by her two sisters Paula Bell and Carol Jones (husband Owen Jones), both residing in St. George, UT. As well she is survived by

Her daughter Dr. Kathryn Corrigan, MD (Dr. Brad Bjornstad, MD) as well as granddaughter Julie Bjornstad (Sebastian Hoch); granddaughter Kathryn Amin (Vish) and great-grandson Rhys.

Her daughter Patricia Fulford (grandson James Audet and grandchild Caden; granddaughter Tricia Audet and great-grandchildren Rain, Marley, Atticus, Scarlett, Elijah)

Her son, Rev. George Corrigan, OFM is a Franciscan Friar and pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa, FL.

Funeral services will be private with later memorial services in Zellwood Station and Tampa, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa, Florida
