Michael J. Daspin

Our father, Michael J. Daspin passed away on March 20, 2016 after a joyous, engaged and deeply rewarding 83 years. His life was full of deep and generous love: for his children, for their spouses, for his grandchildren, his parents, brothers and sister, cousins and most of all for his wife, Sara.

Depending on when you met him, he was Mike, Pop, Buzzy, Mickey, Grandpa. He lived in Orlando for almost fifty years, but he was only ever from New York–a city that shaped every contradictory ounce of Pop’s being. He was generous and kind, he was tough and crusty, he was demanding, forgiving, street smart and educated, he was self-made, strong, loving, proud, confident and a softie through and through. If you knew Mike, you knew he was almost always right and that he would tell you so. He had endless passions and interests. He loved going to the movies. He loved to read. He was a Yankees superfan (most of the time) and always rooted for the Knicks. He loved politics and business, The New York Times, traveling, everything Italian, Barney Greengrass’ eggs and nova with a bialy, the Stage Delicatessen, Broadway shows, and sitting in his living room listening to Billie Holliday with a Dewer’s on the rocks. Mike held equally strong, opposite feelings about many things, including The New York Post, sushi and new-fangled technology.

And then there was United Financial of America. Pop was as committed to his commercial mortgage business as he was to the other pillars in his life. He loved originating, negotiating and closing deals, and going to the office every day was one his great pleasures. He was proud of his work, just as he was proud of his children and his grandchildren and their accomplishments. He is survived by his son Al (Michele), daughter Eileen (Cesare), grandchildren Matt, Shea, Ryan and Chen. He will live on through them and through all of the people whose lives he touched.
