Miriam Audrey Guerster

Miriam was born on December 6, 1935, in Bolton, England. At the age of nine, she moved with her parents to Chingford, London, where she grew up during the turbulent final years of World War II. She often recalled carrying her gas mask to school each morning and taking shelter beneath her classroom desk during air-raid drills. Though she spent most of her youth in Greater London, Miriam always proudly considered herself a Boltoner at heart. During her summers she often headed north to visit Bolton family and hike with friends across the Moors and the Lake District.

Miriam attended Woodford County High School, where she served as a School Prefect and was commended by her headmistress for her intellect, thoroughness, initiative, and sound judgment. A gifted student with a natural aptitude for languages, she passed advanced examinations in Latin, French, English, Pure Mathematics, and History. She later studied at City of London College, earning top credentials from the Royal Society of Arts.

Miriam and her younger sister, Margaret, followed similar career paths, becoming skilled secretaries and commuting each day from Chingford into central London. While working as an assistant to a professor in the Engineering Department at Imperial College London, Miriam met Rene Ludwig Guerster, a Swiss-born, American-raised student. A courtship soon blossomed between two young people from dramatically different backgrounds. Following Rene’s graduation, they embarked on a new life together in the United States, with Miriam leaving behind her family, friends, and homeland for a future with the man she loved.

After a simple justice of the peace wedding, the newlyweds settled in Vineland, New Jersey, where Rene began his career at the Armstrong Cork and Seal manufacturing plant. Catherine was born in 1961 and Jonathan in 1964 and Miriam devoted herself to caring for the family and her young children.

The family later moved to Maple Glen, Pennsylvania, where Miriam and Rene made their home for more than 40 years - first raising Cathy and Jon and later enjoying many years together as empty nesters. Miriam loved the music of Elvis Presley and Dean Martin and became a devoted Philadelphia Flyers fan. She spent countless happy days golfing with friends at Manufacturers’ Golf & Country Club, bowling with the ‘Manny’s Girls’ in Willow Grove, and taking part in the Red Hat Society.

In the early 2000s, Miriam and Rene traded Pennsylvania winters for the warmth of Winter Park, Florida, bringing them closer to Cathy, her husband, Sims, and their sons. Miriam treasured being an active grandmother, knitting blankets for grandchildren, regularly babysitting and cheering from the sidelines at their baseball and football games.

In their later years, Miriam and Rene made their home at The Mayflower at Winter Park, where they formed warm relationships with residents and staff and received compassionate care. The family is especially grateful for the love and devoted support of Miriam’s caregiver, Sandra. Miriam had a lifelong love of playing Beethoven and Mozart on her cherished baby grand. Today that same piano remains at the Mayflower, a fitting reminder of Miriam and the many years she and Rene spent there.

From wartime England to a new life in America, from raising a family in Pennsylvania to watching her grandchildren grow in Florida, Miriam led a life shaped by courage, love, friendship, and an enduring commitment to family.

Miriam was predeceased by Rene, her husband of 62 years, who passed away in March of 2023. She is survived by her sister, Margaret, of Chingford, London; her daughter, Cathy, and her husband, Sims, of Winter Park, Florida; and her son, Jon, and his wife, Kim, of Beverly, Massachusetts. She is also lovingly remembered by her five grandchildren: Colin (Mary Catherine) of Birmingham, Alabama; Chris (Kadie) of Atlanta, Georgia; and Bey, Mason, and Brooke of Beverly, Massachusetts; and by her two great-grandchildren, Mary Sims and Walker, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Her life spanned two countries, nine decades, and generations of a family she loved deeply. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
