was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Walter L. Steele.
Mozelle was born in West Bay, Florida, August 20, 1928, to the late Jesse and Bessie Vinson, and has
lived in Orlando for 60 years, except for a four year hiatus living in Houston and working for NASA during
the Apollo missions.
She met the love of her life, Walter Steele, in Panama City when he was stationed at Tyndall Air Force
Base. They married and moved to Gainesville while he studied electrical engineering at the University of
Florida, then moved to Orlando when he began working at the Martin Company, which is now Lockheed
Martin. During her time in Orlando, Mozelle was a realtor, a barber, and eventually retired from
SunBank. An accomplished seamstress, she made articles of clothing for her entire family.
Mozelle overcame many obstacles, including polio, which left her requiring two different sizes of shoes.
She established Shoe Mates, long before the convenience of social media, pairing women together who
wore the opposite sizes, so they could trade the unused mismatched pairs of shoes.
Mozelle was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for over 50 years. She served in every office of her chapter as
well as serving on the board of the Area Council. She also received both Woman of the Year and
Sweetheart awards on several occasions.
She is survived by her children David Hughey (Janet), Sandra Wright, Jack Steele, and Audrey Davila
(Rigo), and grandchildren Nicholas Miller (Jamie), Allison Norris (Jake), Garrett Miller (Jessica), Matthew
Hughey, Ricardo Davila and Douglas Steele, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
her brother Elbia Vinson, and son-in-law Larry Wright.
A celebration of life will be held at 4:00pm on June 1, 2019 at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 400 Woodlawn
Cemetery Rd, Gotha, FL 34734.
