A devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, scholar, and man of faith, Dr. Debnath lived a life centered on family, learning, and service. He was gentle and kind, mild-mannered by nature but deeply principled, with a quiet strength that guided the way he lived and cared for those around him.
Shortly after their marriage, Dr. Debnath and his wife, Rita, moved to the United States in 1970 in pursuit of the American Dream. Through hard work and determination, they built a life and raised a family while remaining deeply connected to their Indian heritage and Hindu faith.
Dr. Debnath earned both his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Calcutta. He later received his PhD in Economics from Kalyani University and an MBA from the University of Bridgeport.
He devoted 39 years of his professional life to education, teaching and sharing his knowledge with generations of students. From 1974 until he retired in 2013, Dr. Debnath served as a Professor of Economics at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, where he also served as Chairperson of the Division of Business, Social, and Behavioral Sciences. He was a great favorite of his students, and was an extraordinarily hard worker; it was a badge of honor that he never missed a single day of work. Apart from his work at Lane, Dr. Debnath also held teaching and research positions at Tougaloo College, Northwestern University, the University of Missouri–Rolla, and Howard University. His academic and research work also extended into public service. He served for many years as a civilian research fellow with the Department of the Army at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and with the Department of Defense at the Pentagon.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Debnath maintained a deep connection to his Indian and Bengali heritage. He was a devout Hindu who valued his faith throughout his life. He was also an avid reader who loved Bengali poetry, Hindi films, and watching cricket. He also had a keen interest in politics and was a member of the Indian Association of Nashville. He reveled in the good company of friends and always loved a good joke.
Above all, Dr. Debnath was devoted to his family. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his sons and in the lives they built with their own families. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rita Debnath; his son Indranil “Nick” Debnath and his wife, Tiffany, of Orlando, Florida, and their children, Sophia Torrento, Sage, and Sidney; and his son Indrajeet “Ricky” Debnath and his wife, Hilary Jansen, of Providence, Rhode Island, and their sons, Silas and Ashwin.
Dr. Nirmalendu Debnath will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather; a dedicated educator and lifelong learner; and a kind and principled man whose quiet strength touched those who knew him. His legacy lives on in his family, his students, and the many lives he influenced over the course of his 85 years.
