Robert Wen Hsiung Huang, age 91, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025 at his home in Orlando, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 3, 1933, in Zhoulan, Taiwan, as the oldest of seven siblings. After completing high school and his military service, he attended Christ’s College Taipei, graduating with a degree in liberal arts in 1963. While in college, he embraced the teachings of Christ.
In 1964, he met Dr. Roland Brown, a missionary who established the Mennonite Christian Hospital in Hualien, Taiwan, and began working at the hospital. On February 26, 1966, he married Ju Lan (Julia) Chang.
Robert worked at the Mennonite Christian Hospital in Hualien, Taiwan, from 1964 to 1982. From 1968 to 1970, he attended Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan, where he earned a degree in social work. He served as a social worker at the hospital for several years and later as the business manager until he immigrated to the United States in 1982.
In 1982, Robert and his family moved to Hillsboro, Kansas, where he owned and operated the Iron Kettle Restaurant until 1998. The restaurant served classic diner staples as well as traditional Mennonite dishes from Eastern Europe. Every Saturday, Robert and Julia prepared a popular Chinese dinner special, which almost always sold out. The couple retired in 2000 and moved to Orlando, Florida.
In Orlando, Robert was a devoted member of the Evangelical Formosan Church of Orlando. He had a passion for plants and gardening, growing an abundance of fruits and vegetables in his backyard to share with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Julia; four children: Sonia (Chuck) Young of Orlando, Tina Huang (David Schrag) of Champaign, IL, Wayne Huang of Boise, ID, and Keven (Kelly) Huang of Poolesville, MD; and eleven grandchildren: Ethan, Emelie, and Eann Young of Orlando; Anja, Liesl, and Soren Schrag of Champaign; Nium and Aysha Huang of Boise; and Nyah, Rafe, and Iris Huang of Poolesville.
