I first met Shirley when I was 17, she was a Teacher at St. Brigid School in West Hartford, and was visiting our neighbors.  Little did I know that would become a lifelong friendship that I treasured.  She moved back to New York,  then to Florida, but we always kept in touch.  I still have many of the letters she wrote me.  Shirley was truly a unique person, fiercely intelligent, but always kind and patient.  I think of her often, and the conversations we would have.
