She was born in Changanassery, Kerala, India on May 8th, 1938.
Subaida had a passion for education and was a trailblazer of her time, studying nursing at the Trivandrum School of Nursing. She then fearlessly moved with her husband and children to the United States in 1969, and went on to build a successful and thriving family, a true testament to the American dream.
She passionately broke from religious tradition and married Vijayan Pillai, her true love match on May 11th 1961. It was love at first sight!
Subaida was the epitome of a doting wife, dedicated mother, grandmother, and a true friend. Her loving spirit and genuine kindness touched the hearts of everyone who knew her. She faithfully kept her loved ones in her prayers and eagerly extended her heart and hand to all those in need. Subaida supported two orphanages in India, amongst other various philanthropic efforts over the years. She unwaveringly supported her husband in establishing a successful surgical practice in Bedford, Indiana for decades. As a consummate homemaker and fabulous hostess, she showered her guests with hospitality at beautifully executed celebrations and occasions. Her many talents included but were not limited to renowned Indian cooking, mastery of gardening, athletic aptitude, sewing and needlework. Her open mindedness and accepting soul welcomed friends and family from all backgrounds. Throughout her years, she was a devout Muslim, which gave her immense comfort and fortitude, especially during her most trying days. She will be sorely missed by all her friends and relatives, including her family in India, whom she dearly loved.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband Dr. Vijayan V. Pillai; sister Ayesha, daughters, Anita (Dean) and Asha (Mario), son Ajit (Carolyn), and grandchildren Asha, Costa, Mario, Alexander, Nikolas, Ian, Colin, and Tomas.
