Valentin R. Fernandez, "Val", "Dad", "Pop", "Papa". "Tio Nene". 93 years old, died on December 28, 2013 in Orllando, Florida. Val was born on August 14, 1920 to Eloina Remis- Rodriguez and Rufino Fernandez. He served his country by joining the United States Coast Guard following high school during World War II. While in service, Valentin Fernandez, the coxswain of a landing craft, was awarded a rare Silver Lifesaving Medal for "maneuvering a Marine landing party ashore under constant Japanese attack" during the invasion of Saipan, which began on June 15, 1944.
After serving his country, Val worked and retired from two other companies. The last one being a lounge manager at a private country club in Orlando, Florida.
Val was born into the Catholic religion and worshipped his God faithfully. Val also later in life was baptized in the Baptist religion. Val surely covered all his bases with God.
Val's wife of 42 years, Bobbie Fernandez, died 20 months earlier on April 22, 2012. He is survived by his sister, Ena Justo and her two sons Brian and Rodney. He is also survived by his children: Gail Doyle (daughter) and husband Rick from Homosassa, FL; Mike Leer (son) from Orlando, FL; Mark Leer (son) from Orlando, FL; Melissa Leer (daughter) and Judy Seltz from Orlando, FL; Mary Shaw (daughter) and Gary from Howey in the Hills, FL; Michele Wallace (daughter) and David from Homosassa, FL. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Bobby Young, from Franklin, NC; Misty Young from Homosassa, FL; Mark Leer, Jr. from Miami, FL; Jessica Leer, from Miami, FL; Matthew Jack Southwell, from Orlando, FL;
Justin Shaw, from Clermont, FL; Sarah Shaw, from Mt. Dora, FL; Michaela Wallace, from Homosassa, FL; Montana Wallace, from Homosassa, FL. Also by his great-grandson, Matthew John Southwell, from Orlando, FL.
Funeral Services will be held on January 3, 2013. Visitation from 1:15 - 2:00pm and Service at 2:00pm, officiated by Dr. Jerry Forrest.
