

Walters, Barbara J. age 88 died Saturday, April 15, 2017 at McLaren Flint. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 746 S. Saginaw St., Flint, MI with Rev. Dr. Joseph Novak and the Rev. Paul Vtterock officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will take place at a later time at the Great Lakes National Cemetery Holly, MI next to her deceased husband, Allan E. Walters who passed away on June 25, 2011. Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Fund. Barbara was born September 10, 1928 in Seattle, Washington, the daughter of Garfield and Carolyn Unruh. Both parents were ministers and she was raised in the State of Kansas and Wisconsin. She attended college and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BA Degree in Music Education. Later she obtained a Masters Degree in Counseling and Administration from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. Barbara married Allan Walters on June 24, 1951 as part of a joint wedding ceremony with her identical twin sister, Beverly. Barbara and Allan began their teaching careers in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin and in 1953 moved to Flint where they began a 34 year career in teaching music, guidance counseling and administration in the Flint Community Schools where they both retired in 1987. Barbara had a great love for music along with teaching children and guiding young adults. Barbara was a long time, active member of First Presbyterian Church having served as a choir member, an Elder, and served on several pastor nominating committees. She was a strong supporter of the Flint Institute of Music and played the violin in the Flint Symphony along with her husband, Allan, who played flute. She loved to play the piano, traveled to distant places with her husband, enjoyed gardening and Bible Study. Barbara was a member of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), Gamma Phi Beta Sorority (promoting education), St. Cecilia Society (music) and the McLaren Foundation. Surviving are nephews and nieces: Dwight Anderson (Theresa) of Dallas, TX, Christopher Anderson (Coleen) of Guatemala, Stephanie Anderson of Mesa, Arizona, Jan Glasenapp (William) of Hartland, Wisconsin, Jean Gichert of Waterford, Wisconsin, John (Patti) Gichert of Denver, Colorado and numerous grand-nephews and grand-nieces, many friends mostly from the First Presbyterian Church whom she considered "her family” and many friends and neighbors at Genesee Gardens where she lived for several years.
