Barry L. Schlager Sr.

SCHLAGER SR., BARRY LEE age 83, died fighting a courageous fight against cancer on Wednesday May 31, 2017 at Genesys Regional Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 5, 2017 at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 706 Beach St., Flint, MI. Fr. James Mangan officiating. Interment at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be form 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday with a Scripture Service at 7:00 P.M. at the Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc, MI. Barry was born in Elgin, Illinois on January 11, 1934. He attended Central High School in Flint and graduated in 1952. Following high school, Barry graduated in 1956 from the University of Notre Dame with a BS in Commerce. He sold programs at all the football games while there and was an avid Notre Dame fan. During the summers, he would come home and work at Chevrolet. After graduation, he was hired at Buick and worked as a Statistician in Administration until he retired in 1988. He married Rita Haley on April 4, 1959 and they had 4 children Rita preceded him in death in 1986. Barry married Dianne Miller on May 18, 1991. He enjoyed having his grandchildren around him, a good Notre Dame football game and an occasional cigar in his lounge chair outside in the yard. He was preceded in death by his wife Rita, his parents Doc and Ruth Schlager and his stepson William Miller. He is survived by his children Laura (Jim) Flickema, Barry L. Jr, Mary Beth (Dan) Hardaker, Angela Schlager, and Quinn (Jeff Ponder) Schafer. Grandchildren Ashley Jankowiak, Andy (Nichole) Flickema, Matthew Flickema, Tierney and Abigail Schlager, Jacob Hardaker, Kayla Kelly (Vince), and Connor and Kara Myers. Great grandchildren Chloe, Aiden, Haley, Jayce and Vivian. He also leaves Mary Haley, Jerry and Elaine Haley, Betty and Bob Dubey, Dale and Carol McMichael and many nieces and nephews. Barry was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Dale Hansen, nurses and techs at Genesys and Home Town for all the care and support during his four bouts with cancer
