

KOLIOPOULOS, Bess G., of Burton, age 94, a very active member of the greater Flint area community for more than 50 years, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Melody Brookwood Care Home in Burton. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday October 25, 2011 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 2245 East Baldwin Road, Grand Blanc, MI., Father Angelo Maggos officiating. Interment will follow at Balcom Cemetery, Ionia, MI. The family will receive friends Monday, October 24, from 1-3 & 5-7 pm at Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc, MI. A Trisagion Service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Flint Public Library, The Ionia County Historical Society, or to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Born in Ionia, MI, on February 23, 1917, Bess was the daughter of the late George N. and Alexandra (Tsebara) Jimos. Throughout her life, Bess was very active as leader and volunteer in many professional, civic, and social organizations. Among her activities in Ionia Bess served as President of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, and during World War II was elected a member of the Ionia County Ration Board and Chairman of Women’s Organizations Committee for the sale of War Bonds and Treasury Certificates. In September 1947, Bess married the late George J. Koliopoulos of San Francisco, CA. They were married in Ionia, MI and moved to Flint in 1954. She was employed by C.S. Mott Community College for 22 years and was recognized in 1982 as the Chester D. Smith Outstanding Staff Member. Bess held many leadership and volunteer positions within her church and her community. She served as president of the Genesee County chapter of the Michigan Association of Educational Office Personnel; as a member of the Assumption Choir, The Daughters of Penelope, and the Philoptochos Society; and as a volunteer in many civic and social organizations including the Flint Public Library Gift Shop and The International Institute of Flint. Bess is survived by her children, Sandra (Koliopoulos) Rusche, Rochester Hills, MI; Georgia Koliopoulos (Barry Brown), Springfield, VA; and Ted (Terry) Koliopoulos, Burton, MI; 5 grandchildren, Gregory (Jen) Brown, Alexis Brown-Reilly (Neil Reilly), Benjamin Rusche, Nikki Koliopoulos, and Kristen Koliopoulos; 2 great grandchildren; many dear friends and family; and the very special caregivers at Melody Brookwood Care Facility She was preceded in death by her husband, George, and her parents, George and Alexandra Jimos.
