Dr. Byron William Schoolfield, age 79 of Flint, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 18, 2019. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Mabel and Nathan Schoolfield on April 24, 1939. He was a graduate of Butler University and Indiana University School of Medicine. Byron married Bobbi Swartzell on August 14, 1965. He served an internship at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was a Captain in the US Army 1967-1969 where he served as a Flight Surgeon with the 174th Aviation Company in Duc Pho, Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. Byron completed his residency in internal medicine at Hurley Medical Center and practiced in Flint for 46 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Genesee County Medical Society, Michigan State Medical Society, VFW, and Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He enjoyed spending time with his family, swimming and other water sports, vacations in Northern Michigan, reading, and watching sports. Byron is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Bobbi; daughter: Kristi (Brian) Acker of Clover, SC; brother-in-law, Ed Kingsley of New Palestine, IN; niece, Denise (Brian) Herhusky of Zionsville, IN; nephew, Mark Kingsley of Grass Valley, CA; great nieces and nephews: Allyson (Brian) Wales, Nicholas (Anika) Herhusky, Mason Herhusky, Lindsay Herhusky, and Brooke Herhusky; step-grandchildren: Trever (Melissa) Acker, Devin Acker, and Morgan Acker. He was preceded in death by both parents; son, Kevin Schoolfield; sister, Carol Kingsley. A funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, 746 S. Saginaw St., Flint. Rev. Paul Ytterock and Rev. Dr. Joseph Novak officiating. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 22, 2019 from 3-5pm and 6-8pm at Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc. The family will receive visitors on Saturday at church, one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:30am. Interment at Sunset Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Byron’s memory may be made to Crossover Downtown Outreach Ministry or Gerholz Counseling Center at First Presbyterian Church.
