Dennis Reid Johnston
September 30, 1945 – June 3, 2018
JOHNSTON, DENNIS REID age 72, of Flint, MI. September 30, 1945 to June 3, 2018, son of Everett and Mary (Tippett) Johnston. Brother to Kathleen (Buz) Betzoldt. Dennis was born and raised in Detroit, MI. He married Linda Sommer on March 8, 1969, and they raised their three children in Flint: Emily (Don) Wheat, Sarah (Ron) Petrach and Reid (Lauren) Johnston. Dennis worked for Citizens Bank for 34 years, starting in 1969 in the coin vault until his retirement in 2003 at which time he was Senior Vice-president of Consumer Loans. During his time at the bank, he earned a Master’s degree at University of Virginia. Dennis made many lasting friendships during his career at Citizens. Before starting at the bank, Dennis worked for Bell Telephone as a cable splicer. In his younger years, Dennis was a avid runner, participating in the very first 1978 Detroit Free Press Marathon and in many other races. Another of Dennis’s interests was photography. He enjoyed taking photos as well as appreciating the work of others. Dennis always loved music. His taste ranged from oldies and rock and roll to Japanese instrumentals, but his favorite was Scottish bagpipes. Above all, Dennis’s true love was his family, his beloved wife Linda of 49 years and their three children as well as seven grandchildren, Alyssa, Kara, Kayla, Grace, Charles, Anna and Henry. Also, two great-grandchildren Oliver and Jack and a nephew Jason. Dennis touched the lives of all of his family and friends with his profound generosity and guidance. He was example to all around him of honesty and integrity. He will be remembered for his charisma and humor, fair and kind ways, and unfailing optimism, even through many years of illness. He was a friend to all and will be deeply missed. A private memorial service will be held at later date. Arrangements by the Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc, MI. Dear Linda and children,
It is with sadness that I write. I remember Dennis as a supportive husband and father. He always had a smile and an optimistic attitude (even when Flint Central Girls' Swim Team was not favored to win).
Our lives intertwined a great deal for the first 18 years of my daughter Cathy Lancaster's life in Flint...from Co-op Nursery; Pierce School, Mott Adult HS, and FCHS Swimming. It was fun to know your family. Dennis will remain the sweet, cheerful man that I remember from those days.
May your memories of him guide you through the months and years to come,
Sharon (Lancaster) Parker

As pleased as Dennis was with his successful career in banking, I remember how he would absolutely light up when he talked about his days as a line-man for the phone company. Dennis always seemed so completely happy and proud of his family. I often teased him about the long evening talks that he and Linda would have outside in their driveway. The very best if men, I could not ask for a better friend and neighbor. All thoughts and love for the Johnston’s now.

Dennis and I worked together for many years. I always appreciated his insight, intelligence, and humorous approach to many situations. He was a good friend and after our retirements we would spend many enjoyable long lunches together. I will miss him

When i go transferred to Mt Morris as an assistant manager Dennis was my supervisor. He was beyond a doubt one of the finest men i had the priveledge of working with. That was many years ago but his compassion, knowledge and guidence still warm my heart with funny sweet memories. He made the work environment a joy .

Linda, Linda and I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to you and your
family. As you know, I had the privilege of working with Dennis at Citizens.
There are those people in the world that just make you happy and life a
lot more fun. Dennis would have to be at the top of that list. There has not
been a kinder, more honest person that I have met in my life.
He will be deeply missed. May the love and good memories that you two
have made together bring you comfort in the days ahead.
Love, Dick and Linda, Manistee
