

SMITH, Dorothy Helen (Jones) was born on May 6, 1927, in Inkster, Michigan, to Earl F. and Mildred (Church) Jones. On May 7, 1945, she was married to Marion “D” Smith, who preceded her in death in November of 2003. Also preceding her in death were her parents and step-mother, Luna (Hardy) Jones; brothers: Baby Earnest, Earl W. and Leo E. Jones; brothers-in-law Elton Smith, Edwin Smith, and Chet Mince; sisters-in-law Mae Smith, LaVera Mince and Iris Smith; precious Aunt Loia (Lee) Low; granddaughter Elise Sara Smith; and nephew Larry Smith. Dorothy is survived by her children Michael (Mary) Smith of Swartz Creek, Steven (Michele) Smith of Minocqua, WI, John (Mary) Smith of Owosso, and Janice Smith of Sanford; grandchildren Tiffani Haker (Doc), Marc (Kathy) Smith, Krista (Brandon) Saylor, Dan (Melody) Smith, Tracy (Jeff) Mandock, Troy (Amy) Smith, and Chapin Smith; as well as ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dorothy earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mott Community College and Flint U of M. She also earned a Master’s degree from Michigan State University. She taught as a speech and language pathologist in Flint Public Schools for over 16 years, and 4 years in Charlotte County Public Schools in Florida. She also worked as a Christian counselor in Grand Blanc and Flint. She was a charter member of Judson Baptist Church in Burton. After retiring from teaching, she and her husband lived in Venice, Florida, and Traverse City, Michigan. The Lord was very important to her all throughout her life, as were her church, family, neighbors and friends. In her own words, “I loved people.” A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7, at Living Word Church in Midland, 2010 North Stark Road, Midland, MI 48642, officiated by Rev.
