Gary graduated from Flint Southwestern High School in 1969. From there he graduated from Genesee Community College, which is now Mott Community College with an Associate degree in Drafting. Gary was a draftsman at Buick. In 1969, he was drafted into the Army where he served in the Vietnam conflict. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant. When he came back, he returned to work at Buick where he worked for over 30 years. He met the love of his life, Shari Merritt (at that time), while having lunch on a break from Buick. They were married on July 15, 1972 and would have had their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Shari and Gary were blessed to have a daughter, Jennifer Champney and “double blessed” to have a granddaughter, Octavia. Gary loved the great outdoors. He was happiest when he was out fishing, hunting, berry picking, or even just taking pictures of nature with his dog Scruffy.
