On June 25, 1960, Hal married the love of his life, Patricia Blackburn. Together they built a home defined by devotion, hospitality, and family. They loved having family over for cookouts, taking long drives along Michigan’s backroads, and salmon fishing on the Great Lakes. Their home was a place where everyone felt welcome, and their marriage of more than 65 years was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
Hal’s life was marked by a commitment to the principles he believed in and a quiet selflessness that showed most clearly in the time and care he gave to others—especially guiding young people through sports, education, and teamwork.
A gifted athlete himself, Hal played college football before moving to California to begin a career in education and coaching. What began as a passion for athletics became a lifelong calling rooted in discipline, consistency, and a commitment to the students, athletes, and communities he served.
Hal devoted his professional life to education and athletics in Brighton, Grand Blanc, and Fort Walton Beach, Florida. In addition to teaching English and Physical Education, he coached swimming, track, basketball, baseball, and football. He poured his energy into building programs that gave young athletes opportunities to learn, compete, and succeed. He believed strongly in youth programs and was instrumental in establishing girls’ swim teams in the 1960s and 1970s.
His dedication and leadership earned him recognition as MISCA Coach of the Year for two consecutive years. Yet those who knew him best understood that awards were never his motivation. They remember the countless early mornings and late evenings, the hours spent cleaning pools after practice, resetting football fields, and always finding new ways to help athletes improve. Those who worked alongside Hal and those who trained under him knew the depth of his commitment because Hal led by example.
Hal served as Aquatics Director for Brighton Schools from 1979 through the early 1990s and later as Athletic Director for Brighton Schools from 1986 until his retirement in 2000. Throughout his career, he remained dedicated to creating opportunities for young people and fostering environments where they could thrive.
Whether you called him Mr. Anderson, Dad, Grandpa, Papa, Hal or simply Coach, you’ll remember a smile, a twinkle in his eye and a chuckle that made you feel like everything would be ok.
Hal is survived by his sons, Rick (Lisa Stiehl) Anderson and Bill (Meagan) Anderson; his cherished grandchildren, Caitlin (Eric Bernard) Anderson, Ian (Kira Kocot) Anderson, Luke Stiehl, Mallory (Gary) Kienzle, Benjamin (Megan) Anderson, Emily Hadley, and Nathan Anderson; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Annabelle Kienzle, Daphne Anderson, Aurora Hadley, Qhuinn Kienzle, Branson Anderson, Lily Hadley, and Bradie Bernard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and his sisters, Pat and Bonnie.
Memorial Visitation will be held at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Michigan, on July 15, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will follow at Hill Funeral Home beginning at 12:30 p.m. A Committal Service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, 3415 Hill Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan.
