
Howard Gaston Downing III, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Holly, Michigan, on July 1, 2026. Howard was born on January 25, 1944, to Jane Downing and Howard G. Downing ll. He grew up in Flint, Michigan, and graduated from Flint Central High School. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business.
Following graduation, Howard proudly served in the United States Army during the 1960s. He often shared stories of parachute jumps and the intense Texas heat while stationed at Fort Hood.
In 1972, Howard married the love of his life, Nedra Hollar. Together they made their home in Flushing, Michigan, where they raised her three children: Laura Lee, Thomas Edward, and Margaret Anne. Howard began his career working alongside his father at the Howard Downing Insurance Agency before later joining Security First.
Throughout his life, Howard was dedicated to serving his community and he was an active supporter of the Flint Children's Museum, serving on its Board of Directors for several years. In retirement, he and Nedra enjoyed traveling extensively. They shared a love of history, books, and the outdoors, building a peaceful life together in their woodland home in Holly, Michigan, where they were devoted to Dusty, their black cat, and Flora, their standard poodle.
One of Howard’s favorite traditions was spending three weeks each fall along the sandy shores of Lake Superior on the Keweenaw Peninsula near Copper Harbor, a place that brought him great peace and happiness.
Howard is survived by his daughter, Margaret Tirkes; his grandchildren, John and Katherine Tirkes; and his sister, Gail Morgan.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nedra; his daughter, Laura (Richard) Kovalcik; his son, Thomas Edward Hollar; and his parents, Howard G. Downing ll and Jane Downing.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Howard’s memory to the Flint Children's Museum or to the charity of your choice.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Howard's life at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Saturday, July 11, 2026. A memorial visitation will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m.
