James grew up in Wayne and pursued his education with steady purpose, attending Wayne State University and Michigan State University before earning his Masters in Missouri. On November 6, 1982, he married the love of his life, beginning a devoted partnership that remained at the center of his life.
For more than 30 years, James built a respected career at General Motors, where he served as a supervisor. His work reflected a quiet diligence and reliability, and he retired in 2009 after decades of commitment.
Above all, James was a devoted father who loved his two sons deeply and took great pride in the family they built. As a “Papa,” he cherished his grandchildren and showed that love through his faithful presence. He always made time to be there for their events and milestones.
In his everyday life, James found genuine enjoyment in the teams and traditions he followed so closely, especially the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and Michigan State University, watching basketball and football. He also took great pleasure in the beauty of the natural world; planting countless flowers at his home and delighting in the birds he loved to watch.
James is survived by his beloved wife, Guadalupe; children James (Cathleen) Gillespie II and Shawn (Ashley) Gillespie; grandchildren Caleb, Landon, Addisyn, Violet, Jonathan, Tyler, Dominic, Alexander, and Ava; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Camille Gillespie, and his sister, Camille Gillespie.
