LANG, Philip S. was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 23, 1927 to Philip S. Lang and Flora M. Baehrens. After graduating from Paw Paw High School in 1945, Phil began his college career at Michigan State College (University). His college studies were interrupted with two years of service in Alaska for the U.S. Army. Phil returned to MSU to complete his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his senior year, Phil married his loving wife, Evelyn W. Blanchard, on March 17, 1951. Upon graduation, Phil began his career at Saginaw Steering gear Division of General Motors Corporation. In 1963, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Sloan Fellow and graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Industrial Management. Upon returning to Saginaw Steering Gear, Phil held many management positions including Superintendent of Plant 2, Manager of Plant 6, and Director of Quality Control and Reliability. In 1970, Phil was transferred to AC Spark Plug in Flint where he was Works Manager and Director of Business Planning until retiring in 1989. Following retirement, Phil worked as Executive Director of the Flint Executive Service Corps for four years. Phil was a dedicated volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America for 46 years in Saginaw and Flint including 5 years as the Tall Pine Council President, 3 years as state President and was also the recipient of the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope Awards. Phil also served in leadership positions on multiple boards and community organizations including: Center for Gerontology, Flint Institute of Music, MSU Extension Council both in Genesee County and Michigan State University, Senior Citizens Anticrime Network (SCAN), Genesys Volunteers/EverGreen, and the Flint Swim and Racquet Club. While in Saginaw, he served on the Board of Education and as a member of the Kiwanis Club. Phil was a member of Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club since 1970. Phil’s joy was his family and a lifelong passion for vegetable gardening. Phil is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn, of 63 years and five of his six children: Ruth (Mike) Roeder of Troy, Michigan, Mary Jane (Dennis) Grunden of Davison, Michigan, James (Diana) Lang of Valparaiso, Indiana, Sally (Richard) Brunkus of Milford, New Jersey, Susan (Dana) Higgins of Olivet, Michigan and daughter-in-law, Sue Lang of Victor, New York. His son, Philip S. Lang Jr., predeceased him in 2004. Phil also leaves 16 grandchildren: Jennifer Lang, Philip S. Lang (Eileen), Amy Lang Tschiderer (Steve), Eric Roeder (Hilary), Christopher Roeder (Lara), Kathryn Roeder, Kristen Grunden Campbell (Mark), Karen Grunden Hoyt, Michelle Lang, Gina Lang, Stefanie Lang, Jennifer Brunkus, Lesley Brunkus, Avery Brunkus, Daniel Higgins, Andrew Higgins, 11 great grandchildren and special friends, Len and Jean Decker. Phil also leaves a brother, Alfred Lang of Wisconsin, 1 nephew and 2 nieces. Per Phil’s request memorial donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Crossroads Council, Water and Woods Field Service Center, formerly Tall Pine Council, 507 W. Atherton Rd., Flint,48507. Friends may visit the family from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Hill Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the funeral home. Chaplin Hank Messing will officiate.
