Rita was born on December 7, 1944 in Findlay, OH to her parents, Robert and Nellie Gardner. Having received her bachelor’s degree from University of Findlay and master’s degree from Michigan State University, she retired after 40+ years in elementary education and administration.
Rita was very active at First Presbyterian Church of Flint, and was known for loving and nurturing children who were not her own.
“Make no mistake…this is not about me! I am not a hero. I am not a Mother Theresa. This is His story and these are His children. I am but a servant who has been given a ‘talent’ – a unique gift – for which I am responsible. When my master comes for an accounting, I want to present college graduates, ministers, missionaries, loving mothers and fathers; grown-up, Christian, children of God…proof that through the mighty power of God, generational curses can be broken.”
Rita is survived by her daughter and grand-dog, Lin Randolph and Lenny the Pug of New York City, NY; her sister, Cathern (Charles) Paxton; nieces Sara (Lance) Brookshire and Abby Raikes; and great nieces and nephews, Chloe and Paxton Raikes, and Ian and Owen Brookshire. She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul.
No public funeral services will be held. The family will honor Rita’s life at a private memorial at a later date.
