

Steven graduated high school in 1971 and enlisted in the Army shortly thereafter. He was stationed in Korea, where he played a crucial role in controlling the North and South border. Following his military service, Steven worked for General Motors for many years and later retired from the Flint Journal. He was a devoted family man and held a deep affection for his Michigan sports teams.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 32 years, Laurie; his sister, Pamela Stimson; his son, Daniel (Jenni) Paling; his daughters, Nicole (John) McGrew and Amanda (Paul) Petronzi; and his daughter-in-law, Jessica Mathias. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sterling, Caden, Raelyn, Connor, Cody, Hunter, Jaxson, Grace, Paulie, Giuliana, and Lulu, as well as many special nieces and nephews.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Hilda Paling; his brother, Joe Paling; and his sons, Steven Jr. and Ryan Mathias.
A visitation will be held at Brown Funeral Home, located at 1480 Hill Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan, on October 29, 2025, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at the same location, starting at 1:00 pm. Military honors will be conducted at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd, Holly, Michigan, from 2:30 pm to 2:45 pm.
