Alberto “Berto” Eugene Martinez was born in Durango, Colorado on April 4, 1997 to Dennis “Maddog” Martinez and Julie Velasquez. Berto passed from this life, tragically, on Red Mountain Pass, Colorado on August 18, 2019 at the age of 22.
Berto is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Alberto and Clara Martinez; maternal grandparents, Randy and Jo Dickeson; father, Dennis Julian Martinez; uncle, Rick Martinez; and brother, Daniel Schoen.
Berto is survived by his mother, Julie Velasquez; Martin “Tingo” Montano, Sr.; siblings, Rachel Hogue of North Dakota, Rick Martinez of Spencerville, New Mexico, Theresa Martinez of Long Beach, California, Martin Montano of Aztec, New Mexico, Joella Montano of Aztec, New Mexico, Dylan Montano of Grand Junction, CO and Raylene Martinez of Grand Junction, CO. Berto is also survived by his girlfriend, Bailey Johann; his beautiful baby boy, Kade Lee Martinez; and numerous friends and relatives.
From the time Berto was born he had enormous and obvious passion hidden behind his shy, reserved smile. Whether Berto was discussing or practicing bicycle racing, photography, playing instruments, his knife collection, the amazing color scheme he had orchestrated in his coloring books, or anything else among the plethora of interests that Berto entertained, his passion for them would always show through with his smile and conversation. Berto will be remembered as a loving son, brother, father, nephew, and friend.
Funeral services for Alberto Eugene Martinez will be held at the VFW hall at 1404 Ute, Grand Junction, CO 81501 on September 21st at 2pm. A frito pie dinner will be served afterward.
Burial services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Los Martinez, NM on September 28th. A motorcycle-led procession will leave Aztec VFW post 614, 201 S. Park Ave., Aztec, NM 87410 at 10am with burial services at noon. There will be a meal served afterward.
