Betty Rae Huber February 6, 1930 – December 11, 2014. Betty Huber, age 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on December 11, 2014. She leaves behind a beloved husband of 65 years. Betty was born February 6, 1930 in Seminole, Oklahoma. She was the only child of Opal and Ray Ellison. Betty’s father died in an oil rig accident when she was an infant. Her mother later remarried Price Chase, a naval officer and pharmacist. After World War II, the family moved to Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Betty attended Glenwood Springs High School. She worked at the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs pool where she met the love of her life, Bill Huber. Betty and Bill were married on September 4, 1949. Prior to her marriage, Betty attended the University of Colorado and later resided in Boulder with Bill while he completed Pharmacy School. Bill and Betty have four sons; Gary, Mark, Kim, and Chris.
Bill and Betty owned the Campus Drug store on North Avenue, which was established by Bill’s father in 1947. They also owned and operated Huber Drug on Grand Avenue and Plaza Pharmacy in the Teller Arms Shopping Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. Betty did all merchandise buying, as well as TV commercials for the drug stores. In 1970, the Huber family sold the Campus and Plaza Drug stores and later purchased the Grand Junction Credit Bureau with their partner George Wheeler. Betty was an integral part of each business and wore multiple hats from buyer to bookkeeping. Bill and Betty retired in 1985 following the sale of The Credit Bureau.
Betty loved the outdoors and spending time with her family. She enjoyed skiing, hiking, camping, Jeeping , rock hunting trips in southeastern Utah (Moab and Canyonlands) and boating on Lake Powell. Betty was an exceptional cook and baker; the grandkids loved her pumpkin cookies and homemade breads. She loved sewing, needle work and her flower garden. Many times Betty would begin a baking or sewing project at 10:00 p.m., work late into the night and be fresh as a daisy the next morning. She had lots of energy and a great sense of adventure. Betty created a loving and nurturing environment for her family and lasting memories for everyone fortunate enough to know her.
In the early 1970’s Betty was active in the Republican Party and was a staff member for U.S. Senator Peter Dominick’s Mesa County Office. Betty was part of the welcoming committee as Vice-Chairman of the Mesa County (GOP) for Gerald Ford’s Presidential visit to Grand Junction. She was thrilled to be given the opportunity to personally welcome President Ford following his arrival at Walker Field.
Betty is survived by her husband, Bill, and sons, Gary (Shirley), Centennial, Colorado, Mark (Darsie), Cedaredge, Colorado, Kim (Tina), Superior Colorado, and Chris, Middle Mesa, New Mexico, along with ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church at 3888 27 ½ Road, Grand Junction, Colorado on Thursday, December 18, 2014, at 10:00 am. The family is very appreciative for the love and care that Betty received during her hospice stay at HopeWest.
