Charles was born in Denver, CO on February 22, 1928 to Leon and Ethel Thomas and was the fourth of ten children. He attended Grand Junction High School and enlisted in the Army after his junior year.
He met Anabelle Alstatt after returning home from serving some time in the Army. Their love story started when Charles was visiting his sister Dolores at Woolworth’s where Annabelle had worked. After marrying Annabelle in August 1949, Charles served in the Korean War protecting our country. They raised their four children in Grand Junction in the home he built where they reside today. Charles worked for many years as a carpenter and when he retired, he would “tinker” with some building projects, helping others with their home remodels or doing yard work. Charles was an avid bowler and he and Annabelle enjoyed bowling together with their friends and family. He also loved fishing, boating and camping. In their later years, Charles and Anabelle would walk at Mesa Mall each morning and then enjoy meeting up with friends for coffee in cafe court.
Family and friends knew Charles as “Chuck” or “Tommy”. They remember him as a good man with a kind soul who was always easy going. His laugh was infectious and he always had a smile on his face. He loved hosting family dinners and loved watching sports on TV. He had season tickets to the Denver Broncos and loved traveling with his wife to various states and casinos.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years Anabelle, Daughters Diane Warinner and Linda Johnson, Daughter in law Carol Hunziker-Thomas and son Duane Thomas (Patty) as well as nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Danny and an infant son, Son-in-laws Royal Warinner and Darryl Nitz as well as his parents and other close family members..
